OwnEnergy joins WindMade as first wind developer14-08-2013
OwnEnergy Inc., leaders in community and mid-sized wind projects based in Brooklyn, New York, has joined WindMade as a member. The Company partners with energy entrepreneurs across America to develop community scale wind projects.
WindMade is a global consumer label for companies that use wind energy and other renewables. The label, which is backed by the UN Global Compact and conservation group WWF, requires participating companies to obtain at least 25% of their electricity from wind power.
"We are extremely proud to be the first wind development company to label our operations WindMade. Joining WindMade is an extension of OwnEnergy's core values: Passion, Entrepreneurship, Integrity and Teamwork. We are looking forward to working with this likeminded organization in an effort to move us one step closer to generating 20% of our nation's electricity from wind by 2030," said Jacob Susman, OwnEnergy's Founder and CEO.
OwnEnergy's wind projects are co-developed with leading members of resource-rich communities. These local partners are instrumental in the development of every one of OwnEnergy's projects. In return the Company's local partners receive an ownership stake in the resulting wind farm.
Wind energy is the fastest-growing source of electricity production in the world representing 36.5% of all new generating capacity between 2008 and 2012. The U.S added 13,131 MW's of wind in 2012 to its energy resource bringing the total installed capacity to 60,007 MW's. That translates to the ability to power over 15 million American homes.
"We are proud to welcome OwnEnergy as the first wind developer to the WindMade initiative," said Henrik Kuffner, WindMade's CEO. "Through our partnership with OwnEnergy, we're hoping to reach local communities and organizations to help them communicate their commitment and investment in wind power and at the same time build awareness for the benefits of wind energy and grow public support. Maybe we will soon see the first WindMade labeled community?"
NOTES FOR THE EDITOR
WindMade™ is the world's first global consumer label for companies, events and products using wind power. The label is managed by the WindMade non-profit organisation, dedicated to accelerating the adoption of renewable energy by improving companies' ability to communicate their wind energy investments to their stakeholders.
WindMade™ strives to achieve this by increasing transparency of corporate investments in wind energy, by educating citizens on the implications of using different energy sources, and by empowering consumers to favour corporations who make a real contribution to delivering new wind energy.
